Amerikkka's Last Stand By Russell Simmons
My unshakeable belief in the power of encouragement, compassion and patience is what allows me to have constructive dialogue with people from all walks of life. All I know is that if you want to find success in this world, you better always be looking to build on the common threads you share with people. Some of the toughest bridges to build in this country remain those that span our racial divides. I’ll concede that promoting tolerance over fear and rigidness can be daunting. But let us take notice, there are some people in our country who are fighting with every ounce of energy that they have to promote hate, racism and bigotry. I want to warn them now, that anyone whose mission is to keep people apart is swimming against a very strong tide.
Charles Dickens began A Tale Of Two Cities with a line that speaks to the past few weeks, "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times..." We have seen incredible unity surrounding the death of Trayvon Martin, while at the same time we have seen some use his death as an opportunity to continue to spew vile hate.
The Politics of Protest: Rap, Race, and Riots
“Only in Cali where we riot/ not rally” – “California Love” –Dr. Dre and 2Pac
Recently, in Memphis, the shooting of African American teenager, Thomas Martin King, Jr., by George Earl Koontz, a white, off duty security guard at the Loraine Hotel, sparked waves of protests. King was shot while returning from the grocery store with a small bag of Marvin’s Mini Marshmallows, which Koontz thought was crack. Days later, Civil Rights leaders held voter registration and fish fry rallies calling for the prosecution of Koontz, and people across the country sent used marshmallow bags to the Memphis Police Department in protest. Thirty days later, the murder is a distant memory, and Koontz has still not been charged with murder. However, the local civil rights organization has new office furniture, and the stock of Marvin’s Marshmallows has risen 100%. Sadly, the King family is without a son or Justice…

N.W.A "STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON" BIOPIC SET TO HIT BIG SCREEN
After years in a developmental state of flux, it appears that New Line Cinema has officially brought director F. Gary Gray (Friday) on board as director for their N.W.A. biopic, Straight Outta Compton.
Before the studio and producers decided on Gray for the directing gig, John Singleton (Boyz N The Hood), George Tillman (Notorious), and Elgin James (Little Birds) were in the running for the long-gestating project that is finally gaining traction.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the script, which was written by Andrea Berloff (World Trade Center) “details the rise and fall of the Compton, California-based group, whose initials stood for ‘N*ggaz With Attitude.’ The members included drug-dealer-turned-label founder Eazy-E, a young DJ Dr. Dre, and the politically active Ice Cube, plus MC Ren and DJ Yella. Another member, Arabian Prince, left N.W.A. before the group released the groundbreaking debut album Straight Outta Compton in 1988.”
